Recalling the Spring '25 Semester
Less than an hour ago, I was at the Redwood Bowl for the graduation ceremony for the College of Natural Resources and Sciences. From Newman Club, we have three graduates: Daniel Francois (Wildlife), Edwin Ramirez (Wildlife), and Katrina Maynez (Forestry). Newman had no humanities or arts graduates this season, but that feels fitting, almost everyone I met here is some kind of Life Science major.
In addition to congratulating our graduates, another congratulations to John Rutter and Vera Badagliacca who were both baptized into the Church this Easter Vigil, April 19th.
Also, Club elections! On April 3rd, for this upcoming academic year, Justice Borchard has been elected as president, Quinlan House as vice president, Angel Palomera as secretary, Kieran Stack as historian, and Jake LaBarre as treasury.
Also, at this exact moment as I am writing this, I, Anthony Morrison, am electing myself to the position of Newman blogger, a most important position.
Also, the Church has a new pope! On May 8th, the papacy of Pope Leo XIV began. And he's an American, from Chicago! I never thought I'd live to see the day that an American was elected.
For most of Church History, the papacy has been mostly made up of Italian popes. However, Pope Leo XIV marks the fourth consecutive non-Italian elected. Additionally, he's the second consecutive non-European. The Church has never felt so universal.
And I've been enjoying the Pope Leo XIV Instagram edits with the "And when I'm back in Chicago, I feel it" sound bite from that Djo song.
To close out, I'll quote Daniel Francios, "Thank you [God] for giving a very nice pope, a very based pope".
